2011 UK Census

In 2011 the UK government will carry out the next census. It is debateable whether this is a good idea in itself, but what is worse is it will also be including things like 'household income' 'second homes' etc.

I think we all know how reliable the UK government is with our personal data - but this time, to make things worse, the census may be carried out by Lockheed Martin - the US arms dealer. Worse still, this will probably mean that ALL the data of the ENTIRE UK POPULATION will be covered by the US patriot act i.e. the US government will be able to demand access to all the details of the entire UK population.

Ms. Eagle - the minister in charge of national statistics is not concerned - she has said that she is "pretty confident" that there would be robust safeguards on the security of the data. Wow! - Well that’s good - she is "pretty confident" is it me or is that tantamount to saying - "I guess it will be ok".Well, that has filled me with confidence then (!)

Census alert are campaigning against this.

As usual you can discuss in the forum.

I dont mind giving Census data:
Name, Age, DOB, Place of Birth, Address, Occupation. Anything extra to this I feel is an invasion of privacy. How do other people think about this?

Here in the US, it is Illegal to NOT answer ANY questions by a census taker, or to refuse to fill out the forms.
The fine is $100 for refusing to answer and $500 for providing false information.
I personally filled out only the portion asking how many people of what age group, in the household and approximate income, as that information is already in the grid. I refused to answer any personal questions, and I never received any notice of a fine. I am sure some bean counter somewhere decided it was easier to ignore me than fine me, but just the fact that they have the ability to levy a fine for keeping my personal info personal is scary.
And we have to remember that the last US census was Prior to 9-11.
Now with Homeland Security, they (they is the US government and the lackey's thereof) have the ability to legally and illegally make sweeping changes to how and why they can go after us for not telling them everything they want to know.

A quick search found this:

Census Law and Fines
The following section of the United States Code requires that people fill out their U.S. Census forms and provides a $100 penalty for not answering the Census and up to $500 for giving false information.

13 USC Sec. 221
TITLE 13 - CENSUS

CHAPTER 7 - OFFENSES AND PENALTIES

SUBCHAPTER II - OTHER PERSONS

Sec. 221. Refusal or neglect to answer questions; false answers

(a) Whoever, being over eighteen years of age, refuses or willfully neglects, when requested by the Secretary, or by any other authorized officer or employee of the Department of Commerce or bureau or agency thereof acting under the instructions of the Secretary or authorized officer, to answer, to the best of his knowledge, any of the questions on any schedule submitted to him in connection with any census or survey provided for by subchapters I, II, IV, and V of chapter 5 of this title, applying to himself or to the family to which he belongs or is related, or to the farm or farms of which he or his family is the occupant, shall be fined not more than $100.

(b) Whoever, when answering questions described in subsection (a) of this section, and under the conditions or circumstances described in such subsection, willfully gives any answer that is false, shall be fined not more than $500.

I don't think it should be the right of the establishment to know who and where we are, let alone what we possess, or how we've chosen to use or distribute it.
